What is Neuromuscular Dentistry? |
As a neuromuscular dentist, Dr. Walmsley may look at
more than just your teeth in his course of treatment. He
may evaluate how your muscles, teeth, and joints all
work together as a unit. The relationship between these
three impact not just your oral but your overall heath.
To understand neuromuscular dentistry, you must first
understand a few things about your occlusion or "bite."
Your occlusion is the way your upper and lower teeth
come together. The muscles in your head and neck
hold your lower teeth close to your upper ones. You
don't think about this position, it is just 'programmed'
into your brain. Even though you would assume that
your muscles are relaxed in this position, this is not
necessarily the case. In fact, because your jaw muscles
are subconsciously programmed most people are unable to consciously reach a truly relaxed state. Dr. Walmsley can achieve a relaxed position using a battery operated TENS unit.
The TENS unit is a non-invasive means to identify the |
 |
ideal position of your jaw and teeth, while your muscles are in their most
relaxed state. This newly identified jaw position and bite is known as your neuromuscular occlusion. It places the muscles that
control jaw position at their optimal position for both functioning and comfort.
Dr. Walmsley uses neuromuscular dentistry to treat TMJ dysfunction and to evaluate certain cosmetic and reconstructive
procedures. Using a neuromuscular dentist such as Dr. Walmsley may have a substantially positive impact on the final outcome of
your treatment. In fact, if you have problems with your occlusion that are not addressed before dental procedures are begun your
natural teeth or dental restorations may fracture, crack, or chip. (This is also true for cosmetic veneers). Therefore your final
outcome, in many cases, will be substantially better by choosing a neuromuscular dentist such as Dr. Walmsley, to evaluate your
bite before procedures are begun. |
