Dr. Walmsley, DDS
Laser dentistry incorporates state-of-the-art technology that can be used
to treat a number of dental problems ranging from bacteria removal to teeth
whitening.
Lasers are more accurate than scalpels and drills, and help dentists to conserve as much bone and tooth as possible. The lasers work by delivering energy in the form of light and heating the water in the body's cells to the boiling point, which causes the cells to burst. Dentists use different wavelengths depending on whether they are working on hard or soft tissue. In dental surgical purposes, lasers act as cutting instruments or vaporizers. When used for curing a filling, the laser helps to increase the bond between the filling and the tooth. When used in teeth whitening procedures, the laser acts as a heat source and enhances the effect of tooth bleaching agents.
The lasers are utilized in multiple dental procedures. Dentists use lasers for cavity removals and preparation of the surrounding enamel for receipt of the filling; treating gum disease and reshaping or contouring gums as well as removing lesions in the mouth.
Laser dentistry minimizes bleeding during dental treatments because the
high-energy light aids in the coagulation of exposed blood vessels. In addition,
dental procedures performed using lasers are very short and quite comfortable
and painless for most patients.
