Inlays and onlays are dental reconstruction solutions that are used when a
cavity is large but the surrounding tooth is healthy. Inlays and onlays are
also used to replace unsightly, old fillings with restorations that closely
match your natural tooth color. These restorations are similar to crowns and
they not only serve to improve the tooth's appearance, but also make the natural
tooth structure stronger.
Inlays and onlays can be made of porcelain, gold, or resin. Porcelain inlays mimic the natural color of teeth, making them the most optimal solution for restoring compromised teeth. Gold alloy inlays and onlays are supposed to possess greater durability.
Some dentists believe that non-metal and mercury-free dental techniques are the best solutions when it comes to restoring patients' teeth to health and beauty. The porcelain composite material replicates the natural color, texture, translucency, and consistency of natural tooth enamel. It is a strong, long-lasting and natural looking material that is virtually undetectable in the mouth. Porcelain inlays and onlays do not change color over time which gives a better esthetic appearance to the smile. In addition, porcelain inlays and onlays fit almost perfectly into the prepared surface of the tooth, reducing the size of the seam between the restoration and the tooth. This prevents decay from occurring under the restoration.
Placing inlays and onlays usually requires two office visits. During your first visit, evaluation and tooth preparation including removing any existing damaged fillings or decayed tooth material is performed. Then, an impression of the prepared tooth is taken, and a temporary sealant is applied to protect your tooth. The model of your tooth is sent to a lab where the inlay and onlay piece is fabricated. During your second visit, temporary sealant is removed and the inlay or onlay is fitted and cemented into place on the teeth with a special bonding material to provide a permanent seal. Once the inlay or onlay is securely adhered, your dentist will make any minor adjustments necessary to create a smooth, strong, natural surface.
Your inlays and onlays will make your teeth look and feel just like natural,
undamaged teeth. And it only takes two comfortable visits to create the new
smile you've always dreamed of.
